Red Wines - Light, Medium and Full Bodied Tipples

Red wines vary immensely in flavour, depth and intensity making the choice of wines for some a confusing and befuddling experience. Red wine fundamentally is available in three predominant types in terms of body; these types being light, medium and heavy. This article intends to highlight the differences and characteristics of these three and hopefully will provide the reader with some important information on the subject of red wines.

Light reds are essentially lighter than other reds because they contain less tannin than their counterparts. In extreme cases the lightest of red wines have more of a resemblance to whites rather than reds. Typically these lighter types have fruity characteristics. Popular light reds include Pinot Noir and Beaujolais, although originating in France; these wines are now grown all over the world in European countries such as France, Spain and Italy as well as further afield in the New World vineyards of the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Lighter red wines are ideal without culinary accompaniment and are equally suited to drinking with food.

Medium bodied reds are extremely popular due to their versatility. Typically they have flavours aromas and bodies that are medium in nature. Once again old world wine producers are proud of their medium reds, as are those in the New World region of Australia and California. Many of the medium bodied red wines from France have a fruity nature that is generally soft to the palate; once again whilst they are brilliant with food, they can also be drunk alone. Chianti and Cabernet Sauvignon are only two of the types available to consumers; care must be taken when choosing medium reds however, drinkers must be aware of the fine line between rich and heavy fruit flavours and the characteristics that make a full bodied wine.

Full bodied red wine is characterised by rich, intense flavours. These flavours can make the wine heavy to the palate and hence cannot be drunk quickly. Generally hotter climates are suitable for the grapes needed for full bodied wines; in terms of flavours, cherry and liquorice are often cited as popular although due to the barrel the wine is aged in, oak is also a common note. Australian Shiraz is a popular full bodied red from the new world although Californian Cabernet Sauvignon is equally popular.

Hopefully this article has provided an insight into three main categories of red wines. Understandably the subject of wines has been written about at length and goes much further than three categories of body. However with this information it should be possible to understand a little more and make knowledgeable choices on types of wine for your table.
